Suitable for all stages of pregnancy from the moment you find out, right up to birth, and in the early postnatal days. Birthworks pregnancy massage is gentle, soothing, relaxing, and nurturing. Massage can also be combined with individualised essential oil blends for enhanced therapeutic benefits. Treatments are provided by an experienced midwife based in Marlborough, Wiltshire.
A thorough consultation prior to treatment is carried out to identify any concerns, contraindications, pain or particular issues.
As with any massage you will lie on a couch and your comfort and privacy will be maintained throughout. Specialised cushions are used to facilitate positioning. I use the Belloost professional pillow so you can even lie on your front! In later stages of pregnancy or if you have had a caesarean section it may be more comfortable to lie on your side.
PREGNANCY MASSAGE
The benefits of massage are perfectly suited to pregnancy and include:
Relaxation
The gentle nature of touch on the body and has a calming effect on the nervous system. When the body relaxes, stress hormones decrease and feel-good hormones increase. A massage can help to reduce stress and aid mental relaxation and provide a sense of well-being.
Reducing aches and pains
Your growing pregnancy and changing hormones can put a strain on your body triggering aches and pains. Massage can help soothe muscles and joints and interrupt the pain cycle by increasing blood flow, along with oxygen and nutrients to inflamed or demanded muscle fibres. The act of massaging with friction from the hands also creates new sensation which disturbs signals sent to the brain and reduces pain. Massage also decreases tension and enables muscles to stretch and loosen.
Reducing anxiety
Pregnancy is a time of huge change, physically, emotionally and socially. In addition to this changes in your hormones can make you feel more anxious than usual. Massage can promote ‘feel-good’ hormones and lift your mood while reducing tension.
Improved sleep
A good nights sleep is so important for physical and mental wellbeing but can be difficult during pregnancy. By promoting deep relaxation, reducing stress and anxiety and alleviating aches and pains, massage can greatly improve the quality of your sleep.
Reducing swelling
During pregnancy your body’s blood volume can increase up to 45% to support you and your growing baby. While this is normal it can put pressure on your tissues and result in swelling which can be uncomfortable. Massage can stimulate soft tissues and help move the extra fluid, reducing swelling and leaving you feeling more comfortable.
Baby bonding
Massage in pregnancy is time for you away from the demands of everyday life and increases love hormones. Giving you time and space to slow down and focus on yourself and your baby can increase bonding between you. Massage is also the ideal way to involve your partner in pregnancy and preparing to meet your new baby.
POSTNATAL RECOVERY MASSAGE
After birth and during transition to motherhood you can feel overwhelmed, vulnerable and emotional. Physically your body needs healing and recovery. All the benefits of massage during pregnancy are continued through this healing period. Using massage in the early postnatal days is a gentle and nurturing way to help restore, nurture and support your journey.
