Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils obtained from plants for therapeutic purpose. While essential oils have been used for thousands of years and are easily accessible, like all medications or treatments they should be treated with caution. Just because something is ‘natural’ does not automatically mean it is safe. There are a number of essential oils that are safe for most people but some should never be used during pregnancy. Essential oils need to be selected and blended for individual use.
Essential oils are administered through inhalation or through the skin and the chemical elements within the oils have physical and psychological effects with benefits including:
Relaxation
Balancing mind and body
Stimulate endorphins and oxytocin (feel good hormones)
Energise and invigorate
Relieve aches and pains
Improve circulation
Promote healing
Aromatherapy can be used to complement and enhance the benefits of massage throughout pregnancy and in addition to massage and acupressure to prepare for birth.
Accessing advice from a trained professional regarding the use of essential oils, particularly during pregnancy, is recommended. I have undergone additional training to ensure safety within my therapies and practice.
